Private Influence in the Public Sector

You don’t have to take my word for it, but I think Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline’s popular diabetes drug, is just one more case of corporate influence over government. For eight of the eleven years the drug has been on the market, the FDA has required that the drug be accompanied by written warnings, either to doctors or consumers, stating the heightened risk of severe health problems such as heart attack and stroke that are caused by the drug. While no class action lawsuits have been filed to date, Avandia lawyers have filed an estimated 13,000 individual law suits. Between the huge number of lawsuits and the clear evidence that the drug is harmful, it’s hard to see why the FDA has not recalled the drug. I smell private interest exerting power over this case. Wellbutrin is an antidepressant drug marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. The drug, which is actually bupropion, has been linked to birth defects by the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. There are Wellbutrin lawyers lawyers all over the country offering free case reviews to parents of children born with a birth defect after the mother took Wellbutrin. Most often the birth defects were cardiac birth defects, affecting the heart, and usually correctable with surgery. Wellbutrin lawyers are able to help families with claims to cover the costs of this surgery.
